The Hon. Kirsti Westphalen, – Dean of the Los Angeles Consular Corps and the Executive Committee cordially invite all members of the Corps, Trade /Tourism Commissioners, and Protocol and Liason officers to attend our Thursday, June 27th, 2013 meeting at The Port of Los Angeles, San Pedro, CA.
The meeting will begin promptly at 11:00am at 425 S. Palos Verdes Street, where we will be welcomed by Port of Los Angeles executives. We will then be guided a short 7 minute walk to a yacht which we will board for a tour of the harbor, be given a presentation on the Port of Los Angeles, and be served lunch. Please note, as there will be a boat tour we cannot accept attendees after 11:15am. The boat tour will conclude at approximately 1:00pm
The Harbor Tour at the Port of Los Angeles will showcase the immende operation that makes it the #1 container port in North America. With 7,500 acres and 270 berths, the Port of Los Anglees has over 85 massive cranes that handled over 8.1 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units of containers) in 2012 alone. Our delegation will get to witness first-hand how the Port of Los Angeles handled $283 billion worth of cargo and 175.2 million metric revenue tons of commodities from its container, automobile, break-bulk, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and passanger operations. The Harbor Tour provides a unique perspective about one of the most important economic engines in the U.S. that few will ever experience.
Our delegation will be hosted by Executive Director Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., the first female executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. She oversees the daily operations and internal management of the nation’s number one container port. The Director of International Develeopment, Stephen Cheung, will present to our delegation aboard the yacht.
Notes: Newly arrived Chef de Posts will be welcomed and introduced. Departing Chef de Posts will be recognized. Lunch will be served aboard the boat during the Harbor Tour. The event is at no cost to attendees. Parking is available on site at no charge.
